We are all sinners.
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (Romans 3:23)
For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. (James 2:10)
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: (Romans 3:10)
Sin has a penalty that must be paid.
For the wages of sin is death; (Romans 6:23a)
And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. (Luke 16:23)
Christ paid that penalty for us.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23b)
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; (1 Corinthians 15:3)
God offers this payment as a free gift to us. We can’t buy it or earn it.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
To receive the gift of Eternal Life all we have to do is ask.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:9-10)
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)
A prayer like this. It’s not the words you say but what’s in your heart that counts.
Dear Lord Jesus,
I know that I am a sinner and that sin has a penalty. I ask that you forgive me of that sin and come into my heart as my Saviour. I receive your gift and trust you to take me to Heaven when I die. I ask you to help me to live for you from this day forward.
